Over the years I have learned what particular styles, colours and fabrications look good on my body type, and which ones rarely flatter my shape. This H&M mint eyelet skirt and peplum top break 2 of my “avoid at all costs” rules: 1. Stay away from satin, especially across my thighs, and 2. No skirt lengths below the bottom of my knee. I was so obsessed with the other trends in these pieces (mint, peplum and eyelet) that I had to try them on, even though I knew it was going to end in utter disappointment. Shockingly, they didn’t look half bad. What are some of your “do not buy” rules?

Love the mint outfit! Looks fabulous! My one rule use to be not to wear heels because I was so tall, however, heels are too pretty to not wear and enjoy!

Thanks Amy! Ha ha, one of my old rules used to be to not wear flats because I’m so short, but my feet can’t take heels all day long!
Rule breaker! This is sooo so pretty! I’ve been going back and forth on peplum tops on me but it looks so pretty on you!

Thanks Rebecca! You’re right, I need to throw my rules out the window. . . well. . .maybe just in the backseat.
So I totally thought this was a dress until I read your outfit details. I loveeee this get up and the fact that you can wear each of these pieces in so many different ways!
I always have an issue buying chandelier or long earrings. I don’t know why, either! I am just convinced I can’t wear them. Ha!
Hannah Tattoos and Pearls
Thanks Hannah! I was hesitant to buy both pieces but once I put them together and it looked like a dress, I just had to have them both!
I totally agree about chandelier earrings! I have several pairs, but every time I put them on, I then take them off because I feel like they over power me. I’m sure it’s in both of our heads!
I typically look pretty stumpy in something below my knees, but haven’t written them off completely because, like you, every now and then I will try something below the knee on that looks pretty good!
Love this!

Thanks for visiting Jenn, and thank you for the lovely comments! Yes, these are recent. I bought them about 2 weeks ago. They are H&M Trend. Hopefully your store still has them!
ok Jenny, this is it. this is my absolute favorite outfit of yours! the colors look amazing on you. very classy , very chic.
one of my rules is no satin too as i feel that it shows lines and bulges but this outfit you have on is perfect and doesn’t have the qualities of the satin that i had in mind.
i tend to avoid racer backs or any tops that cut inwards as i think it places emphasis on my broad shoulders.
Ha ha, thank you so much!!! Totally agree, satin usually just emphasizes all of my flaws! I think I got lucky with the outfit!
Love this dress, gorgeous cut out shapes.

Thank you so much!!!
Hi Jenny! Thanks so much for commenting on my waffles and Star Trek post. =P I’m so glad you did, because I adore your blog! I’m a college graduate paying off student loans and working at a television station for some experience (and not enough money) so I don’t have the kinda cash to invest in establishing an extensive, flashy wardrobe collection. But I WANT to be stylish and chic! Your style is something I’d love to emulate, so I’ll keep checking here for inspiration and see what you’re wearing, for sure! This outfit is so feminine and effortless; perfect for a warm, sunny day!
Thank you so much Rachel! Trust me, I feel your pain! We’ve all been in your shoes. My younger years were spent reading magazines dreaming of my future wardrobe. Hey, I still do that today, only now I have fashionable bloggers to be jealous of too!
Oh my gosh, I LOVE this dress on you! The color is just gorgeous. The peplum and the detailing are just perfect. Love it.

OMG! I cannot tell you how much I freaking love this whole outfit!
Awww, thanks Alissa!
I must say, this is one of the most striking outfits I’ve seen in awhile, it’s simply beautiful! I also tend to not do anything below the knee but my eyelet(love eyelet)skirt broke that rule. You look wonderful in mint!
Thank you so much Cara! You are so sweet!
this outfit is STUNNING!!! I love the color, shape, texture, everything! It is so flattering on you. xx – E

Awww, thanks so much Emily!!!
what a beautiful outfit! I thought it was a dress at first – I love it together and love the color!
Thank you Katie! And thanks for visiting!
This is the cutest outfit ever from H&M, or is it just you who made it look so awesome?
Awww, you’re making me blush! That’s so sweet!
That outfit looks great on you! Love the color and the eyelet…pattern? (Not sure what the right word is there!) And I love your ring and shoes
Thanks so much Jess!
Not sure, but pattern sounds about right.
Ohh, its a skirt & a top combo? That’s tricky! It looks great, and I like it better knowing its a skirt and a top coz now there’s way more combinations you can make with it :p
Thanks Morgan! That’s one reason I bought it. The skirt and top give me so much more versatility and options than a dress!
I love this dress! Where do I start? The peplums! The eyelet! The color! So awesome!
BTW, I started following you after you linked to the IFB Over 30 bloggers article, and I was so excited to see you commented on my blog. My 4-year-old saw me looking at your blog and said “Mommy is that you?” And I said, “I wish!” Seriously, your style is amazing! OK, I’m going to stop gushing!!
Ha ha, you just made my day Katie! Thank you so much for your lovely comments!!
I love your outfit! Very feminine and flattering. Your accessories add just the right touch!
Thank you very much Sylvia! Thanks for stopping by!
This looks absolutely amazing on you!! Did you buy it recently? I love it!

Thank you very much Angela! Yes, I bought the top and skirt about 2 weeks ago. It’s from the Trend line. Hope you can find them!
Wow, that is one stunning dress. I’d turn my head to look if you passed by. Love the shape and details! I sometimes avoid mid-calf skirts and super short shorts. I always go for florals and printed denim, especially this season.
Awww, you are too sweet Melissa. Thanks!
You look like a knockout on these number for sure. I feel the same way that no matter how much i would love to try something in clothes i tend to stay away. But luckily i took the plunge and give maxi dress a try. Also thank you for visiting my blog. Appreciate it !
Thanks so much Sam! Yes, I need to do the same with maxi dresses!
Wow! That’s a very pretty Peplum Dress!
PS – New outfit post is up at my blog, come have a look – http://shopaholicutie.blogspot.in/2012/06/hey-lovelies-i-hope-you-are-having.html

Thank you very much Nitika!
Jenny, I just did a looooong comment on your outfit and rules and it’s gone grrr, that happens quiet often on your page, dunno why
Ok now the shorter version:
You’re such a head-turner when it comes to dressing up, and manage to make even a potato sack look sophisticated (not that you would wear sth like that but you know what I mean hahaha
. You radiate elegance and grace and are the ultimate in classic femininity. You are probably my most favourite blogger right now. Too bad you live in Canada, you would be my perfect shopping buddy hehe
xoxo
Ani <3
Ani, thank you so much for your super sweet comments. I’m so sorry about the deletion of your comments! I didn’t know it was doing that. I’ll have to see why.
Yes, I’m sure we would have a blast shopping together!!
I am seriously loving this dress – the color the eyelet lace, the peplum – gorgeous!
Awww, thanks!!!
I have been trying to hunt down that peplum top for so long and can’t find it in any of the H&M’s here in Vancouver! The entire set looks great on you. Thanks for the visit and follow on my blog fellow Canadian!
Marisa
http://style-rhapsody.blogspot.com
Oh no, hopefully you can find it! I really wish Canadians could shop on H&M online!!
So gorgeous! I had no idea these were separates. Hmm, rules for me? No baggy cropped pants and no colors that wash me out.
Thanks! I totally agree about no cropped baggy pants!!!
I thought this was a dress. Looks SO good and as far as your rules go, they certainly didn’t apply to this outfit!
Ha ha, thanks so much! I actually like the fact that it looks like a dress, but then has the versatility of 2 pieces!
