This is the year. . . to get healthy.  Well. . .for me to get healthy.  In past years I’ve set New Year’s resolutions only to lose sight (i.e. ditch them) by the third week in January.  I’ve always looked at them as something I had to do instead of something I wanted to do, but this year my outlook is much more positive and focused.

Getting fit and healthy is a pretty typical resolution on everyone and their mother’s list, but my wardrobe is actually begging me to shed a few pounds.  You see, I’m wearing the cape sweater in these photos for two reasons: 1. because it’s super comfy, cozy and warm, and 2. to hide the extra 12 lbs I’ve put on since the summer.  Now I know some of you are probably rolling your eyes while others have just dropped their jaws.  I’m in NO WAY saying that I’m overweight.  However, 12 extra pounds on someone my height and frame is significant…so much so that about half of my wardrobe no longer fits me.  I’m always wearing the same super stretchy H&M jeans because the 11 other pairs in my closet can’t make it up past my hips.  I haven’t worn any of my pencil skirts or slim fitting dresses in months, and even these lace pants I bought only 2 months ago are too tight, which leaves me with NOT ONE pair of dress pants that fit.  But the piece I’m most upset about not being able to squeeze into is this tropical print skirt. . .it’s just too pretty to be not worn!

Although my motives are mostly vain (yes, I will admit that), I’m also actually really out of shape.  I can’t do a push up and I get winded after climbing 1 flight of stairs (no, I’m not joking).  As I get older and my metabolism slows, I’m quickly realizing that if I don’t change my “sit-on-the-couch-eat-everything-in-sight” habits, that 12 extra pounds will soon turn into 20, then 25 and so on.  Hopefully putting this goal into writing and sharing it with you will keep me disciplined, focused and accountable.  You’ll know I’ve reached my goal once you see me wearing that pretty tropical skirt again.

So, today is Day 1 and this is The Year.  The year I will get healthy.  The year I will set a goal, and see it through until achievement.  The year to be happy, proactive and positive.  What is this year for you?  Did you set any New Year’s resolutions?  Do you have a similar goal to mine?

That’s great Jenny! I am right there with you, 10 extra pounds on me. That can also roll into more weight with a blink of an eye. Good luck to us.

Good luck! I totally understand, if your clothes don’t fit right you don’t feel right, regardless of if anyone else even noticed a few pounds gain. I’ve definitely noticed changes from my early-mid twenties to now (am 30) so good on you for addressing it if it concerns you 🙂

I think you look fabulous but I totally understand… it’s all about feeling comfortable in our own skins. Good luck on your New Year’s resolution, I will follow your lead as I’ve been gaining a few pounds myself since I stopped running a couple months ago. Here’s to us, making 2013 a healthy and happy year!

You go girl, I am already motivated by your post, will be joining you in the effort of sheddding the load after Christmas indulgences, hoping to drop a jean size! You look fab though, love the cape and the colour scheme, the booties are gorgeous! Hope you have a fantastic 2013!

Jenny, I think you look absolutely fabulous in these photos and you are perfect just the way you are! But I fully support a healthy lifestyle, and there are so many benefits that come along with that in addition to being able to wear all of your fantastic wardrobe! I wish you the very best in your goals this year, and if you ever want to hit a spin class (basically that is what keeps me sane) in Toronto, let me know, and we will make it a fun date 🙂

    Morning Jenny,
I can so relate to your resolution. 1 year ago this month I too made the same resolution,. But I made it a lifestyle change, and lost 42 pounds. And currently maintain that weight loss.
You look great, but I know what you mean you have to feel comfortable in your own skin. Regardless of what others may say. If you need any advice, shoot me an email. I will gladly share with you.
Good luck to you, you can do it!!! Have a great day 🙂

I wouldn’t have noticed that you gained any weight, but just because you’re not “fat” doesn’t mean you can’t strive to get your body back to the way you feel best about yourself! I’ve been the same height and weights since I was 15 (that’s 12 years), but when I was 15 most of those pounds were made of muscle and these days…not so much! I remember the first time I couldn’t fit into something and I was totally freaked out, so I understand! Good luck!

Good luck Jenny in your year to be healthy! I am a junkie when it comes to exercise and health. But somehow, I let the eating go and I am actually putting on weight even though I am running 40+ miles a week. It truly is 80% what you eat and 20% exercise. Start small & reward yourself for goals accomplished.

BTW, I love this swing sweater – so stylish & comfy. I don’t own anything like this, I am too scared how much bulk it will add to me.

Aww, thanks so much Alice! I completely agree, it’s definitely more about what you eat than exercise, but I do know it takes both to become truly healthy. It’s so funny how our bodies work. I can’t believe you run that much but are still gaining weight. Hopefully it’s muscle!! 🙂

I am right there along with you, girl! I have also put on a fair bit of weight this year, and actually realized that since I began my blog 3 years ago, I am 20 pounds heavier. It’s shocking. Though this is the first year that, like you, half of my wardrobe truly no longer fits me. I look at all the pretty pieces in my closet that will no longer zip, and that is movitvation in itself to make this year different! I’m off to a good start so far, and it HAS to continue! I actually wore this SAME poncho in a post coming up this week and for very similar reasons… cozy & comfy but also hides everything. Sigh. That said, I also own a fur stole from H&M and have never paired the two together, so am DEFINITELY going to be doing that soon – I love the way it looks!! Here’s to a happy & fit 2013!!

    • Jenny
      January 8, 2013

Aww, thank you so very much Kate! It’s funny how the pounds just creep up on us. I can’t wait to see how you style this poncho because I only ever wear it with jeans. I need to find a new way to style it! 🙂

That is definitely my problem too…I’ll eat healthy and exercise for 1 week, and instantly be discouraged that I don’t see any results! I know it’s completely unrealistic but I can’t help it. 🙂 The gym in my building offers yoga and pilates, and I’m thinking of taking a few classes.

And secondly, thanks for being so forthcoming in your goals and keeping it real. I’ve had the same thing happen to me, I’ve put on about 8 lbs since last summer which isn’t a huge deal but I get real ticked off that my clothes don’t fit me right anymore! I’ll be getting back in the gym this week and I’m going back to my schedule of cooking at home and not eating out so much. Good luck with your goals! We can keep each other in check!

    January 7, 2013

Jenny you are amazing and I love reading your blog all the way from Australia. I totally understand how you feel. Since turning 30 the kg’s have started to pile on – which is something I never really experienced (I was one of those people who seemed to be able to eat anything and not put on the weight). I considered myself fortunate, but those days are gone! This year while it’s not my resolution I’ve been monitoring my calorie intake (awesome app called ‘my fitness pal’ has made this really easy) just to think about what I’m eating and it’s providing me with motivation to get out and exercise, especially if I have my eyes on a little sweet treat!
So good luck with your goal. It sounds like you’re on the right track with such a positive attitude!

    • Jenny
      January 8, 2013

Aww, thank you so very much for your sweet words Rhia! In the summer of 2011, I lost 10 lbs (which I have since gained back) and used the My Fitness Pal app too! 🙂 It was so easy to use and I liked that I could log in on my computer too. The main thing I realized by using that app was how many unnecessary calories I intake. I would eat 4 bite-sized chocolates and think that it wasn’t a big deal, but it was incredible how many calories it added to my daily intake!

Ha ha, thanks so much Rachel! I bought this sweater last winter so it’s no longer available. I do gain the most weight on my lower half, but I guess I’m lucky in that I also gain it all-over, so weight gain isn’t as noticeable as if I gained it only in one area, like my stomach.

    January 7, 2013

Completely and totally relate to this. I have also put on a little weight in the last few months that I am trying to get off. But I think the important thing is to focus on how you FEEL rather than the number on the scale or on your clothing. Good luck!

    xo
    Lauren

    • Jenny
      January 8, 2013

I completely agree with you Lauren! I don’t really measure my success by the number on the scale, mostly because I have no muscle at all. So I know that once I start exercising I will gain some muscle and that will counterbalance the fat I’m losing. I don’t mind what the scale says, as long as my clothes fit. The reason I’m using my clothing as the measurement is because I know I felt good when I could fit into them, but at this weight, I don’t feel so great. Definitely great advice! Thanks!!

  • Amy
    January 7, 2013

I’m sure I’ll be the 50th person to tell you this, but I think you look great right now!! But I understand that you’ve got lots of cute clothes in your closet that are just begging to be worn:) Just don’t get carried away with the weight loss! Good luck! I was once told that it’s 70% diet and 30% exercise & I’ve found that to be true. Which I love because I’m not a huge fan of exercise in general.

      January 8, 2013

Thanks so very much Amy! Ha ha, it will definitely be difficult for me to get carried away with the weight loss because I find it so challenging! It’s not easy for me to lose weight/fat, so every day is a struggle. Once I reach my goal of fitting into my old clothes, somehow I mentally shut off and don’t feel like losing additional weight. I lost 15 lbs in the summer of 2011, and it was 5 too much and my clothes were actually all too big for me! That was just as upsetting!! I quickly gained 5 lbs back (not on purpose but more so because it was actually too light for me and I felt it wasn’t a good look). Now, I’ve gained it ALL back and I’m just hoping to get back to the point where my clothes fit again. Thanks so much for your sweet words!

But getting healthy is an awesome goal. Transitioning to the new routine is the hardest part. Once you get past that short period, the routine will be easy-peasy!

Aww, thanks Julia! I agree, the first few weeks are the hardest! I know it’s completely unrealistic but I always expect to see results in the first few days! 🙂 I know…it’s crazy! I just have to keep reminding myself that it takes time.

I love how you have made this sweater look so chic by adding the fur! I have this sweater, so now I need to go get a fur scarf! Thanks for all the wonderful styling inspiration you provide! Hope you have a great New Year, xoxo
