This is the year. . . to get healthy.  Well. . .for me to get healthy.  In past years I’ve set New Year’s resolutions only to lose sight (i.e. ditch them) by the third week in January.  I’ve always looked at them as something I had to do instead of something I wanted to do, but this year my outlook is much more positive and focused.

Getting fit and healthy is a pretty typical resolution on everyone and their mother’s list, but my wardrobe is actually begging me to shed a few pounds.  You see, I’m wearing the cape sweater in these photos for two reasons: 1. because it’s super comfy, cozy and warm, and 2. to hide the extra 12 lbs I’ve put on since the summer.  Now I know some of you are probably rolling your eyes while others have just dropped their jaws.  I’m in NO WAY saying that I’m overweight.  However, 12 extra pounds on someone my height and frame is significant…so much so that about half of my wardrobe no longer fits me.  I’m always wearing the same super stretchy H&M jeans because the 11 other pairs in my closet can’t make it up past my hips.  I haven’t worn any of my pencil skirts or slim fitting dresses in months, and even these lace pants I bought only 2 months ago are too tight, which leaves me with NOT ONE pair of dress pants that fit.  But the piece I’m most upset about not being able to squeeze into is this tropical print skirt. . .it’s just too pretty to be not worn!

Although my motives are mostly vain (yes, I will admit that), I’m also actually really out of shape.  I can’t do a push up and I get winded after climbing 1 flight of stairs (no, I’m not joking).  As I get older and my metabolism slows, I’m quickly realizing that if I don’t change my “sit-on-the-couch-eat-everything-in-sight” habits, that 12 extra pounds will soon turn into 20, then 25 and so on.  Hopefully putting this goal into writing and sharing it with you will keep me disciplined, focused and accountable.  You’ll know I’ve reached my goal once you see me wearing that pretty tropical skirt again.

So, today is Day 1 and this is The Year.  The year I will get healthy.  The year I will set a goal, and see it through until achievement.  The year to be happy, proactive and positive.  What is this year for you?  Did you set any New Year’s resolutions?  Do you have a similar goal to mine?

Ha ha ha, the famous saying in our house is “Starting Monday.” My Man gained some weight too, so we’ll always say that it’s time for us to get healthy, but then it’s the weekend and we want to indulge, so we say we’ll eat healthy, starting Monday. Over a year of Monday’s have passed, and we still haven’t done it! Well, except for this Monday! He’s joined me on my journey so hopefully it will be easier doing this together!

For the record Jenny, I think you look fantastic – but I understand what you mean. I actually started my gettiing fit resolution 4 months early by joining crossfit, and while I haven’t shed a single pound, I’ve gotten more lean and toned. Now, I know this sounds cultish, but crossfit has completely changed my mindset – I’m no longer concerned with getting ‘skinny’ and just committed to getting strong, Actually, my resolution for 2013 is to achieve Jennifer Aniston arms – apparently, arms are the new face! Lol!

However you decide to work on your goal girl, good luck! I know you’ll succeed 🙂

Aww, thanks so very much Cat! Ha ha ha, I would kill for Jennifer Aniston arms!!! 🙂 I will definitely check out crossfit. I hate exercising so I’ll try anything that might keep me motivated. I completely agree with you…it’s not about the number on the scale, but all about how you look and feel. I just use the number on the scale as a reference, but overall, it doesn’t mean that much to me. I just know now that my clothes don’t fit and I’m definitely out of shape. Good luck to you too! 🙂

Tell me about it. I simply had to start a diet this new year because there are so many beautiful clothes in my closet that are just too tight. Such a shame. As I’ve gotten older, the weight is soooo hard to take off.

My tip: I purchased a Fitbit about a month ago to help me get some extra exercise. I love it and am starting to see the results already. You may want to look into it. It makes exercise into a game.

    Good luck Jenny,

Hmm, I’ve never heard of a fitbit. I will definitely look into it. Thanks for the recommendation. I’ll try just about any type of exercise, and turning it into a game actually sounds fun! Good luck with your goal too Tammy!

That is so awesome! I’ve noticed my metabolism slowing down (can’t eat 6 oreos a day anymore and not worry about it). My friends roll their eyes when I say I want to lose 5 lbs (the 5 that I gained over the holidays) but it wasn’t there before and it WILL be gone! I love the cape by the way. The fur is an awesome touch.

Good for you! Need to get back on the workout train, I sort of fell off over the Christmas break. You can do it! When I had my baby, my ONLY motivation, well not only, but my main reason for getting back into shape was so that I didn’t have to buy new work clothes, cause I’d rather spend money on weekend clothes =)

Thank you so very much Sarah! It’s funny what can motivate us! Hey, as long as it keeps me on track, I don’t really mind what the motivation is! 🙂

    Hi Jenny !
This is my first comment, but I relate to your article 100% !!
I have been following your blog from France for quite some time now and love your style, and alos I like that I have the same kind of body as yours, so it gives me ideas on how to dress myself, coz you always look incredibly chic.
I made a commitment this year to become fit and healthy, I have made this resolution before, but this time I really want to, and I realize that it is going to be a journey and that the most important thing is to stay motivated, even when the results are not fast and I want to quit because it is hard, etc… I just had a baby and I am 20 pounds overweight and totally out of shape.
You may want to check this website : http://zuzkalight.com/category/workout/
The workouts are killer and its free, you just have to ignore the big boobs 😉 ! I started 2 days ago and I am dying ! But it feels good to challenge myself !
Sorry for the looong comment (I will be quicker next time !) and pardon my english, obviously it is not my mother tongue 😉 !
And a last work of encouragement : You can do it girl ! It is worth it !! (and this tropical skirs is to lovely to stay in your closet)

      January 8, 2013

Wow, thank you so much for your sweet words and wonderful support Claire! Congratulations on your new baby! What a wonderful time in your life this must be. Thank you so much for the website suggestion also. This is so great! I’m not going to join a gym because I know I will never go, so I’m trying to find exercises to do at home. This is perfect. Thank you so very much, and I wish you so much luck on your journey as well! 🙂

I wish I could bold/highlight in this because I want to emphasize how much I love love love that sweater. I can’t believe you snagged this at H&M? Was it recent? I have to have it.

As for your NY Resolution. You look amazing, but I definitely understand the woes of no longer fitting into 1/2 the clothes in your wardrobe despite the fact that u may not technically be overweight. (stretchy jeans – check. oversized sweaters – check. and dresses – flowy ones!).

Anyways: You look awesome in this post – but I hope that you get to ur goal too (me too!)

Found you blogsurfing and I’m glad I did. Got me with your first outfit!

Ha ha ha, thank you so very much for your sweet comments Alice! Unfortunately, I purchased this sweater last winter, so it’s no longer available. 🙁 Ha ha ha, stretchy jeans, oversized sweaters and flowy dresses are the 3 perfect pieces to hide the extra weight! 🙂

Thank you so very much Jin! Ha ha, even if I lose some weight, I’ll NEVER be too skinny or model like. My body is naturally curvy and bottom heavy, so I could never be stick straight no matter how hard I tried! 🙂

I love the fur! It’s so glamourous!

Also, getting healthy isn’t as hard as you might think it would be. It just requires a lot of small gradual lifestyle changes, but they become natural, and they’re not hard to maintain once you get into them – you just feel better, and you feel crappier when you don’t maintain them, and so you do!

    Good luck!

I feel you, girlfriend. I don’t mind the extra lbs so much, but I just found a pair of killer khakis in the back of my closet that I’m going to have to drop a few sizes to fit back into. That’s definitely one major motivation for me! Good luck!

Good luck Jenny! Putting it out there for all to see is one way to hold yourself accountable.

I would like to lose that dreaded last 8-10 lbs but I can see that it will take more than exercise to win this battle and I can see I’m not motivated enough to put in all the extra effort. I’m rooting for you though …maybe your loss will be enough to motivate me again : )

      January 13, 2013

Aww, thanks Suzanne! I’m trying to lose the last 12-15 also, which is definitely the hardest! Just like you, I wasn’t motivated enough until right now either. Slowly there were more items each week in my closet that I couldn’t fit into, and after adding extra weight at Christmas, I finally hit my tipping point. It’s definitely a personal decision that can only be made when you are ready. I’ve been telling myself for months that I needed to get healthy but never had enough motivation until now. Hopefully I can keep that up!

  • Nic
    January 17, 2013

Girl I hear you! We can all improve and it’s so hard to get motivated when it’s so cold outside. All I want to do is cozy up and eat. I’m battling my second sinus infection of the season so that’s made it worse. I’ve put on a few too and I HATE it when my clothes don’t fit. It makes me uncomfortable and I definitely don’t like to take photos when that happens. I do however love a cape and you look great!

Well you’re making head way already and working out is great once you start getting into a grove. Hopefully we’ll both be healthier and the months get warmer.
