Funny story about when I purchased this Chanel blue beauty .  .  . if you follow on Instagram, you may have seen that I purchased it was when I was in Chicago last month during Easter.  I usually only splurge on designer bags when I’m celebrating a milestone in my life, for example my very first bonus, a promotion at work, or my first birthday in seven years without a boyfriend (my 26th b-day, also a Chanel).  Well, I threw my rules out the window when I saw this vibrant cobalt blue bag at the Chanel store.  I saw it sitting on the shelf, and I fell instantly in love.  I tried it on, but left the store empty handed because I didn’t want to make an impulse purchase on something so expensive.  I usually put a lot of time and thought into my big purchases.

One hour later, I found myself walking back into the Chanel store.  I couldn’t stop thinking about this bag!  The sales associate greeted me by my name, and I felt a little embarrassed because I was hoping she wouldn’t remember me.  Another woman was trying on my bag, so I patiently waited my turn.  She was debating between the cobalt colour and the same bag in white.  I tried on the bag but this time I filled it with all of my purse contents to make sure it would fit my essentials.  However, once again, I left the store empty handed.

Another hour later, my thoughts consumed with this handbag, I was walking into the Chanel store for the 3rd time that day!  I smiled when I saw the same woman who was in the store an hour earlier, still debating between which colour to buy.  Just as the woman said “I’ll take the blue”, I said “I’ll take it too”, and we all laughed.

I haven’t regretted buying this blue stunner for a moment.  The colour is just gorgeous, and the size is perfect for day or night.  I’ve decided to sell a few of my other handbags to justify the purchase, which in my head, means the bag was free!  My Dad keeps telling me that’s not really how it works, but hey, a little pretend never hurt anyone.

I’m curious, do you own any designer handbags?  Do you put a lot of research into them or are they more of an impulse purchase?  Do you only buy them for milestone occasions, or do you buy them just to treat yourself?  Do you save for a while knowing you will purchase a designer bag once you’ve saved enough, or it is more of a “buy it when I feel like it” kind of thing?

I don’t really own too many designer handbags- I have a nice Coach one and I used to have a Kate Spade one before I grew out of it. I love the classic look and style of a Chanel bag though. Someday I want to get one!

Oohh, Coach and Kate Spade are two of my favourite “more affordable” designer bags. Obviously I’m a huge Chanel fan too 🙂 but the prices are just was too steep for me to have a large collection. Thanks Rachel!

I really want a Chanel bag but have not take the plunge yet. I want the black patent one with gold details. I might treat myself to that next year.

Ha ha ha ha, you are one lucky lady, Sheree! I’ve purchased all of my designer bags myself. I keep telling Justin that once he makes a certain amount of money, he has to buy me a bag, but I have a feeling that won’t happen. 🙂

OMG I want that purse! LOVE! Love the whole outfit! And I guess the most “designer” my bags get is Coach or Longchamp… if those can even be considered! I just bought a new Coach one… but I’m dying for a Chanel one. Maybe for my 30th birthday or something big!

    • Jenny
      April 25, 2013

Coach and Longchamp are definitely designer bags. . . I just consider them more affordable designers. Your 30th b-day is a perfect excuse to treat yourself to a Chanel! 🙂 Thanks Samantha!

Haha I love that you took so much time to carefully contemplate it! That’s a good method–usually I try to wait a bit too to make sure it’s not an impulse purchase. I have a few designer bags (and by a few, I mean two) but nothing as amazing as a Chanel!

    • Jenny

Thanks Alyssa! Usually I spend a least a few weeks researching my purchases, so this was very unusual for me! 🙂

That bag is to die for (so is the coat !!!)

I dream of the day when I’ll get my chanel bag, I’ve been saving for a while, but with two kids, I feel kind of guilty spending that much on myself ! I do cherish a Mulberry bag I got while in New York some years ago. I fell in love with it in the store but was actually planning on getting a Louis Vuitton speedy bag. I went back a couple of times and my husband finally conviced me to get the Mulberry one. It’s still on of my most prized possession !

But usually when it comes to bag, I’ll usually go the the middle and get a more affordable designers like Michael Kors (I have 3 of his bags) or Kate Spade.

    • Jenny
      April 25, 2013

You are too sweet, Marie-Eve! Thank you! I completely understand how you would feel guilty about spending that money on yourself when you have children. If I have kids, I’m sure my spending habits will definitely change. I love MK and KS! 🙂

You are so right. . . even with clothing purchases, I’ll sometimes leave the store and wait to see how much I think about it over the next few days to determine whether I really want it or not. 🙂 Thanks Niki!

Jenny – that is a gorgeous purchase! Where are you planning to sell your bags – I would love to buy one of your lovely purses since I know you take good care of them.

I recently acquired a used LV from a gf. I am not sure I am ready to spend the type of $$$ for a purse – my hubby’s frugal ways has spread to me!

That is one of the most gorgeous bags I’ve ever seen! If you went in the store three different times then it must have been meant to be. I’m dying for the day I can buy myself a Chanel, that will be a huge milestone all in itself for me!

    April 24, 2013

Haha I’ve played the waiting game before too! Actually the designer bags I have are much less expensive so it wasn’t QUITE so much of a splurge. But I do have a Coach clutch I got for my wedding, and a Marc Jacobs bag I got right after finishing my first year of law school. So I guess I’m like you and like to buy special things for special occasions!

What a bag!! I would think about it a lot too! I usually make a long decision before purchasing on a designer bag too. BUT, I have not yet splurged on a Chanel since that is my ultimate splurge in the future. SIGH. LOVE LOVE this bag!

I own one Chanel bag (black), too many Coaches and Dooneys to count, and a Gucci bag but I actually disliked the Gucci bag. It was a gift and entirely not my style. I almost bought a red Louis Vuitton bag from my friend’s mother but the size and style wasn’t right. I really love the color f this one. If I could own another Chanel bag I think I’d pick blue as well. I love these bright colors they are coming in.

That bag is very you – congrats, Jenny! I am not a really big handbag person but most of mine are designer in some way (ranging from Chanel and Miu Miu to lower-priced ones like MBMJ or Rebecca Minkoff). I usually think long and hard on the more pricey ones… took me over 6 years to finally bite the bullet on my Chanel!

Love that this bag has a story. The closest thing I have to a designer handbag is a Foley Corinna I got off ebay and I guess my vintage coach.

I just find it really hard to spend thousands on a bag, especially since I tend to shop all the time. I tend to go with no name bags that still look gorgeous and are well made but they come with a much lower price point.

Ok, first of all this outfit is perfection! This pic will be all over pinterest in no time! Second, that bag! What a beauty! I dont think I can splurge on a Chanel now, but if I had the money to splurge Chanel would probably be my number 1 choice. Its just so classic, vs so many other beautiful bags which will soon probably be played out. Great purchase! Hope you enjoy it 🙂

I love your bag so much! I laughed at your story about going to the store three times…I would totally do something like that! But I never ever splurge on something that expensive…I have a few LAMB bags that I bought online at a huuuge discount, but they were complete impulse buys. When I see a good sale, I’m not missing it! I’ve been better lately about trying to control myself though 😉

My other “designer” bags (MK and Coach) were bought for me from my boyfriend so I feel no guilt about that at all! Haha!

I love that you went back to the store three times before buying it. To me, that’s pretty good justification that you needed the bag in your life. Besides, you can also justify it because you were on a trip and it was totally cheaper to buy it in Chicago than to buy the bag in Toronto!

I don’t own any high end designer bags. I tend to go for those mid range designer bags, but I am waiting for some sort of Milestone to make the next jump.

    April 24, 2013

Absolutely love this combo of that skirt, the jacket and gorgeous bag.

I’m a bit of an impulse buyer but I’ve never bought a “real” bag like a chanel, YSL, etc. I usually go to Rebecca Minkoff sample sales once or 2x a yr and spend a couple hundred on a bag and my other ones are from Madewell, Anthropologie (sales), vintage coach, etc. I have one Proenza Schouler bag that I got as a gift….otherwise, my social work salary and the fact that I’ll be paying off student loans until I’m 90 stop me from getting a Chanel (or Celine, Reed Krakoff, Alexander Wang, Prada, or Phillip Lim- to name a few dream bags hahaha). As a gift, I’d gladly accept any and all designer bags but I’d feel too guilty buying it myself…

When I bought my medium flap, I agonized over it in the store. It was totally not planned at all. I phoned a couple of friends for opinions. It was just so beautiful. Ironically my parents were proud of my splurge, the fact that I could “let go” of money like that and not be bound by it. Granted, if I would have been putting myself under as a result of the purchase, that would be a different story…. I treasure my Chanel. I have two now, and they are both special and will be with me and my childrens childrens forever! 🙂
So jealous of your blue. It’s beautiful.

I LOVE this bag! The zipper on the inside is so unique and the fabric actually looks sturdier than some Chanel’s. Caviar leather?
I typically save and save for a new bag but every once in a while I am sucked in by a big purchase that I just love (e.g. ferragamo shoes!). I never regret it 🙂

Congrats on the amazing bag! Wear it in good health xo

Secondly, that bag is a beauty! I love how you went back three times! That’s totally what I do when I’m trying to decide to make a big purchase! I do love designer bags but I only own Coach Factory bags at the moment. I would usually get one at Christmas! I’ve been dying to get a “real” Coach bag and I LOVE the Coach Willis bag but my husband won’t let me get it because he thinks it’s too expensive 🙁 So sad!
