PSA: Back Up Your Computer Today

Crazy Style Love, Canadian Fashion Blog

I’m taking a (forced) break from my NYC posts to delivery a public service announcement.  If you haven’t done so in the last couple of months, I strongly urge you to stop what you are doing and back up your computer immediately.

My laptop has crashed twice in the last week, but last night it died a quick, painless death.  The hard drive needs to be replaced, rendering it useless.  My local Apple “Geniuses” are not available until Thursday night, which means that I’ll be going through some major computer withdrawals over the next few days.

I’ll try to keep this short and sweet.  This is how my nightmare went down:  I told myself to back up my computer before I left for vacay.  Of course, I didn’t.  Computer crashes while in NYC.  Apple “Geniuses” tell me they have to wipe the computer clean and I will lose everything.  I tell them I’ve never backed it up.  I will lose a year of photos, documents and memories.  I’m devastated.  Gaby is consoling and a good friend.  I call Justin, in tears.  My super smart and sweet Man tells me to get my computer back from the so-called “Geniuses” and he will try to fix it.  I go 4 days without a computer.  I notice symptoms of withdrawal.  I arrive back in Toronto, and my super smart and sweet Man spends NINE HOURS trying to recover my info.  He does.  Justin is my hero.  I back up my computer. Last night my computer crashes again.  This time my super smart and sweet Man can’t fix it.  At least I have a back up.

Whew, that was a mouthful. Lesson to be learned . . . technology can be unreliable,  and unless you have a super smart and sweet Man to come to your rescue, back up your computer today.  You never know when you may have technical issues, and it will save you a lot of time, trouble and tears.  Please learn from my mistakes so you don’t have to make your own.

Oh man, I am so sorry to hear that Jenny, actually that same thing happened to me in August. BUT, when you take the harddrive out and put it in a harddrive case and connect it to another Computer you have all the data and Pictures. That harddrive case doesnt cost much around 10$. Hope that helps?

PS: Did you get my email?

Thanks Ani! Argh, I’m sorry you had to go through that too! Unfortunately, because of the way the MAC Book Air is built, it’s not a simple fix. We called around for a couple of quotes to do hard drive recovery on the Air and the quotes started at $1,000! Crazy! That’s why Justin tried to do it himself. We could have bought another computer for that price! And yes, so sorry for not answering your email yesterday. I’ve been distracted with my computer issues, but I’ll definitely respond tonight.

This makes me incredibly nervous–I’m not sure I’ve EVER backed up my computer. Definitely doing that this weekend.

Oh the heartbreak!!!! I definitely know how it feels, Jenny as I went through that a year ago and have learned my lesson! I’m always working with my external hardrive and saving files in 2 places. That may be a little crazy, but I am super paranoid! Thank you for the reminder! Ah, I hope you’re feeling better!

This happened to me when my daughter was about 1. My husband actually did the damage trying to fix something that didn’t bother me but drove him crazy about my then computer. I lost loads of baby pictures 🙁 I haven’t backed up in a while… should do it again!

I should say in his defense he did recover a bunch of what he did but still this camera crazy lady still lost a bunch of baby snaps.

I am the queen of killing computers and never backing up my info. I hope you are back up and running with a new shiny computer soon!

This is probably my worst nightmare. That said, are you backing up your blog?? I do mine every so often, not sure how to back up a wordpress blog {or if it’s even necessary?} but on blogger it’s super simple + exports your blog to a file you can store on an external hard drive.

I am the worst about backing my files up, and since I’m a writer and a blogger, this would be a huge problem if it happened! Geez. So sorry this happened to you.

I went through the same thing when trying to “troubleshoot” issues with my iPhone. I thought I lost everything (since my phone has basically replaced my laptop, except when I’m online shopping and have a migrane from trying to do so on a tiny phone screen), but my hubs amazingly restored my phone and helped me take the leap into trusting iCloud. Backups are huge, especially as everyone relies so heavily on these machines, so thanks for the reminder!

I bought my Mac Book Pro last year and have not backed up any of my data! I better look into that. I am so bad about stuff like this.

Good luck in hoping your computer will be fixable.

Why pay for an external drive and do it yourself? What happens if there’s a theft in your home or a fire? Backing up your files OFF SITE is the only way to ensure you’ll get your stuff back. As I posted down below, there is a $59 per year service that automatically backs up your stuff called Carbonite. They saved me heartache before and I highly recommend them.

Oh my gosh!! I can’t even imagine….I am seriously going to BestBuy today to buy an external hard drive today….I’ve been telling myself for months to do it….and your story has kicked my butt in gear.
I’m so sorry you had to learn the hard way…always the worst! 🙁

Noooooooo again??? crap!! Well at least you have it all backed up now! I took 8,000 photos from my computer to the external drive, still have thousands to transfer…takes so much time! I feel like mine is going to give up one of these days, it has been acting up a little bit lately…..let’s hope she can keep her act together, why can’t she keep up with my multitasking?
Loved the re-cap, felt like I was reading a scene from a tv show 😉

Stop whatever you are doing right now and immediately sign up for Carbonite (www.carbonite.com). I’ve been through two computer crashes. Both times, I came home with my new computer and within minutes, I retriever all of my stuff from Carbonite’s cloud. A true lifesaver and worth EVERY penny.

I have had my computer for almost 3 years and had never backed it up. I had to buy a new wireless router and bought one that automatically backs up my computer. Now I feel much better. It would be devastating to lose!

I NEED to do the same!! I keep telling myself that I’ll do it today and the day passes and I don’t.
But this is a good and important reminder.
You’re very lucky to have been able to salvage your memories…which is the cause of the pain when the computer crashes.
    Thanks for the reminder 🙂

My macbook crashed and died less than a year ago. And now I am getting the wheel of death on my new one non-stop. I backed up last night and am just waiting for it to die on me! It’s getting annoying…I would expect a $1200+ computer to last more than a year!!! =(

Hey, sorry for your loss. I just wanted you to know (because I happen to be one of those tech savvy people) that you can have your computer automatically backed up by a company called Carbonite. (www.carbonite.com). It costs $59 per year but is so worth it. They saved my life when my computer crashed in the middle of a semester and I had to get my major projects back. It’s worth doing!
