I’m taking a (forced) break from my NYC posts to delivery a public service announcement. If you haven’t done so in the last couple of months, I strongly urge you to stop what you are doing and back up your computer immediately.
My laptop has crashed twice in the last week, but last night it died a quick, painless death. The hard drive needs to be replaced, rendering it useless. My local Apple “Geniuses” are not available until Thursday night, which means that I’ll be going through some major computer withdrawals over the next few days.
I’ll try to keep this short and sweet. This is how my nightmare went down: I told myself to back up my computer before I left for vacay. Of course, I didn’t. Computer crashes while in NYC. Apple “Geniuses” tell me they have to wipe the computer clean and I will lose everything. I tell them I’ve never backed it up. I will lose a year of photos, documents and memories. I’m devastated. Gaby is consoling and a good friend. I call Justin, in tears. My super smart and sweet Man tells me to get my computer back from the so-called “Geniuses” and he will try to fix it. I go 4 days without a computer. I notice symptoms of withdrawal. I arrive back in Toronto, and my super smart and sweet Man spends NINE HOURS trying to recover my info. He does. Justin is my hero. I back up my computer. Last night my computer crashes again. This time my super smart and sweet Man can’t fix it. At least I have a back up.
Whew, that was a mouthful. Lesson to be learned . . . technology can be unreliable, and unless you have a super smart and sweet Man to come to your rescue, back up your computer today. You never know when you may have technical issues, and it will save you a lot of time, trouble and tears. Please learn from my mistakes so you don’t have to make your own.
